At last we got back on a bike today. Cycled from Central Park entrance at 5th Avenue up to East 90. We went through a few blocks on the Eastside, and managed to stay on the right side of the road – literally. We then crossed back through the park around 100th Avenue over to the West side where we connected up with Riverside Park (fans of You’ve got mail, know what this looks like!), then back through the local streets to Central Park, and back down to exit on 7th Avenue. It was all pretty easy, as the roads we went on were one way. It was great to get back on the bike, and certainly felt better for it afterwards.
Technology has changed how people interact with art. Yesterday we visited the MOMA, which was packed. Apart from wandering around looking at some amazing pieces, famous and not so famous there were so many people taking photos of the art. Added to the experience, the entire gallery has free wifi. Next time you are visiting a gallery – don’t forget to choose your device…. hummm, hang on do they allow this in Adelaide?
Over the years access to the blog has relied a lot on us taking our own gear. It use to be mini computer which was hacked, and a variety of cables for the cameras etc. These days it involves iPads or phones with a wifi connection. When in smaller towns we rely on public libraries (they rock!) or hotel wifi, if not expensive. However in the larger cities – there is always the Apples stores. They can be relied upon to be open late at night, packed with people, and plenty of access to technology. Tonight is one of those nights. We have had a fab dinner out (which I will blog about later) at one of the top places in New York – as described by the New Yorker next to us. Now I’m standing in the Apple store across from Central Park after 9:30pm at night.

Since physically escaping work, it appears I can’t seem to totally escape the topic of libraries in the news. This morning for my reading over a bowl of fruit, is an article on the New York Public Library’s negotiation with the Big Six book publishers for them to lend e-books to the public – which they all agree on in principle. The writer (President of the NYPL), also outlines restrictions placed on them by some publishers, and the selection remaining limited, and on-going need to promote the service due to the lack of knowledge the wider community has about libraries offering ebooks as a service. Wherever you are the debate and issues remain the same in public libraries.
