Hello from Provence

I am typing this while I upload some more photos. I hope you enjoy them.

This cycling trip is occuring during the pleasant temperature range of 30 (in the morning) to 35 (in the afternoon). To test us, our first part of the trip involved a hill climb to see the Abby of Frigolet.

From there it has been reasonably flat especially in the Camarague.

The food has been everything we expected – very tasty and breakfast fulfilling in a very French way.

I thought coming to France again would break some of the stereotypes Australians have about the French. But it is true that there have been many French people cycling with baguettes. For that matter there have been many French people walking with baguettes.

The one shop that you can guarantee will be open at any time in provence is the Boulangerie.

But I understand why!

Any way off to send some photos.

Plane flight… KL to Paris…

It was long. 12 and a bit hours seems very long. Everyone has their own way of dealing with it. Closing my eyes and doing my chant over in my head when there is turbulence.

The worst part was over the Bay of Bengal. Okay not as bad as others have described to me, but bad enough for me. Plus the movies on this plane where not ones that you could easily choose, as the previous flight (no Bollywood!!!).

Food was okay – but the breakfast was better. The plane went over Paris, so we had a lovely view of the Eiffel Tower as we came in to land….. ah that was worth it alone.

After proceding through a strangely designed 1970`s building we collected our luggage, hopped on a bus to the next terminal where we sat around and generally wasted time until the 10am TGV train (15 mins late) arrived to Avignon. The train was great – comfortable, so much so we fell asleep. Thankfully we woke up in tme and we bought sandwiches on board before we got off. The scenery was lovely, rolling fields, mountains….. ah France

KL Public Library

Yes we visited their public library on day 1. I know many of your would be dissapointed if we didn’t.

The library is in a semi curved building that has windows on both sides. The larger windows face a cricket pitch and the law courts – not to mention the world’s tallest flagpole. And what was infront of the window? large leather recliner chairs. Amazing. Sadly, it was a public library where they expected silence – and they got it. The only sound was us walking around.

The library was spacious – talk about room to grow! It is spread over two floors. It is new so it has lots of space for more books. The shelves were steel and the shelf ends were part of the above shelf.

Of course, like many modern public libraries – they have RFID, and their library mangement system is Horizon (surprise!).

Will uplod some photos later – running out of time.

Report from KL

It is a muggy 32c here today. I am located in an internet business centre on the 1st floor of a budget hotel in area that I don’t actually know where it is on the map. But hey that’s the fun of a holiday.

For those of you who asked Helen not to take photographs of libraries, I am sorry to disappoint you but we have some already. I am sure Helen will fill you in on the details.

KL has been the heights of luxury for us. Greeted by 50 people eager to help at KLIA made finding the one ready to whisk us away in the Merceded Benz limo hard to find. Cool (read frozen) towels were appreciated given our sudden change from chilly Adelaide to the claustrophobic humidity.

Our hotel is in KLCC a modern set of shops, hotel, office and accomodation surrounding a large park area. KLCC is connected to the rest of KL by a modern driverless light rail system. But you could stay in KLCC without the need to visit the rest.

But we didn’t we visited KL town centre, the central market, china town (no I don’t need a new watch or the latest VCD!) admired the range of food and the intoxicating (usually nice) smells.

We ate in a curry house and were offered and accepted a range of interesting foods including the largest prawn I have seen. Our digestive systems are not yet suffering in adverse consequences. This great and cheap experience was followed up by a top notch dinner in our hotel. I could eat like this every day.

I am going to try to upload some photos now.

Plane flight from Adelaide to KL

How do you pass the time on a plane flight? On Malaysian Airlines you watch Bollywood films of course!!! After watching two films the flight was nearly over. I must admit the films were great. I watched Swades and another film that I can’t remember (but it didn’t have much dancing or singing at all). Food was okay too.

The flight itself only had two sections of turbulence. Of which I thought was going to be a lot worse based on what they said. The first section was crossing the bight, and the second was where the plane was over the sea just off Australia towards KL. Thankfully it was not too bad.

When we got to the airport, we had to catch a train to the terminal to collect our luggage – very bizzare. Then once collecting luggage you walk through customs (“just go through” waved on through), and you go into the arrival hall, where you are surrounded 280 degrees by people waiting for people, and at least 20+ drivers asking you if you want a taxi. Thankfully we had one ordered.

Once leaving the terminal it was sooo humid. But the driver offered us a cold towel, bottled water, and music. I am very grateful this was organised! The ride itself into the hotel took over 45 minutes.

Okay I know we have a 12+ hour flight to go tonight so I shouldn’t be too excited.
